2014 The second grade Glue Crew reused old shoe boxes to create collection boxes and gave up their recess to collect Elmer's Glue sticks and sent over 800 glue sticks to Terracycle for recycling.
Kindergarten and first grade students participate in the RECYCLE RANGERS program. Two students per lunch shift encourage students to recycle lunch waste.
Gina Bonomo visited Bushy Park on December 5th, 2016. She made presentations about the importance of recycling to each grade, as well as a visit to lunch shifts, to increase awareness of daily habits. Here is a photo she took of our lunch room on her visit, "I do remember taking pictures of your awesome recycling posters and station." Gina Bonomo, Recycling Coordinator, Howard County Environmental Services (615 students)
Healthy School Environment (7)
This year's Bushy Dash had a Halloween Theme. The main fundraiser for the PTA for the past three years! 100% of the money collected funds PTA activities and events - classroom enrichment, school assemblies, Family Fun events, and much more! Every student was be able to participate in the fundraiser and parents are invited to come and cheer on their child during their grade level special arts time on Thursday, October 24th. Students were sponsored to run or walk in the event and a great time was had by all. This is a healthy initiative and prevents the selling of products in the environment through other fundraisers such as selling wrapping paper. (2016, 615 students plus parents and teachers)
Family Fun Fit Night
Family Fun Fit Night is held every November and is a great way for families to get out and have some fun. Nutritionists, yoga demonstrations, karate and pickle ball are just to name a few. 66 Families participated in 2017 with 193 participants overall.
Over a period of 10 weeks, girls in the 3rd through 5th grade participate in an after-school program like no other. Designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength, the Girls on the Run curriculum inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique.

Walking Wednesdays
What & Why:
Walking Wednesdays is part of Bushy Park’s Health School initiative.Students have option to walk around a laid out part of the field during recess. They keep track of the number of laps they walk and volunteers record it on their index card. We keep track of all the laps they walk the entire year and give out awards for the students in each grade who walk the most as well as the grade the walks most! Its a great way to get the kids moving at recess!
Each week almost 150 students walk with about 10 parents volunteers. That's about 400 students a semester....about two thirds of our school population!

"I am also including a picture of the light switches in my classroom. We only turn on one light each day in the classroom. This helps to save on energy and also it's just too bright for me to have all of the lights on."

May 2017 The Green Machine shows the school how fun the outdoor classroom can be!!
"Today I took my class out to the Outdoor learning classroom to do our health lesson. The kids absolutely LOVED working outside on the amazing benches/table tops and enjoyed being outside in the warm weather. They were sad when we had to leave to go back inside and pack up."
